Vehicle Profile: The 2012 Volvo XC60
More value, power and technology for the crossover safety king.

Photo: The 2012 Volvo XC60
Midsize crossovers need to live up to their status as all-purpose vehicles. From its iconic trapezoidal grille to its raked greenhouse and muscular flanks, the new 2012 Volvo XC60 is a standout on the road. Whether it's simple things like the daily commute and runs to the home improvement store or tough family hauls like interstate travel in the worst weather Mother Nature can throw at you, the new 2012 XC60 gets the job done ? with utility, refinement, performance and safety second to none. This year, the XC60 offers new trim levels, redesigned option packages and a power boost on the road-pummeling R-Design model.
Volvo sells the XC60 in three versions: The well-equipped 3.2 (MSRP $32,900), the sporty T6 AWD and the high-performance T6 R-Design.
Driving the front wheels on the 3.2 (all-wheel drive is optional) is an inline-six-cylinder engine displacing 3.2 liters and making 240 hp. The T6 AWD boasts a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder good for 300 hp and 325 lb/ft of torque while the T6 R-Design quickens the pulse with 325 hp and 354 lb/ft of torque from a revised version of the 3.0-liter turbocharged six, an increase of 25 hp and 29 lb/ft from last year that makes this the most powerful production Volvo ever.
Both turbocharged models get All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction, and regardless of model, power channels to the drive wheels through a six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. Fuel economy is impressive throughout the range; the XC90 3.2 with front-wheel drive returns an EPA-estimated 25 highway mpg.
Exceptional safety is nothing new for Volvo, the company that shaped, tested and implemented most of the technology that saves lives on the road every day. A four-wheel antilock disc brake system with Hydraulic Brake Assist and Ready Alert Brakes are standard, and Volvo broadens the safety spectrum on the XC60 with such advanced systems as Dynamic Stability and Traction Control, Roll Stability Control, Whiplash Protection Seating and world-first "City Safety," which can sense a pending collision at speeds up to 19 mph and apply the brakes to prevent it or reduce its severity.
The available Technology Pack deepens your sense of security at speed, offering a host of safety technology that includes Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, Lane Departure Warning and Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist, which uses radar and a digital camera to maintain a set distance between you and the vehicle ahead at any speed including in stop-and-go traffic. The Blind Spot Information System comes as a separate option.
The XC60 is also a showcase of sumptuous luxury and in-demand infotainment technology. Standard items include an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat with three-position memory and lumbar support, eight-way power and adjustable lumbar for the passenger's seat, HD Radio, SIRIUS Satellite Radio with complimentary six-month subscription, Bluetooth® with Streaming Audio and power-adjustable heated exterior rearview mirrors with memory function. When the time comes to transform the XC60 from opulent transport to chore wagon, drop the 40/20/40-split/folding rear seat to create over 67 cubic feet of cargo space.
This year's XC60 gathers a wide variety of optional equipment into convenient trim levels. Available exclusively on the XC60 3.2, the Premier trim level features such highlights as an Aluminum Décor Steering Wheel, leather seating surfaces, a power passenger's seat and a Laminated Panoramic Glass Roof with Power Sunshade.
Depending on which XC60 model you choose, the Premier Plus level gathers the features from the Premier level and adds amenities such as front-and-rear Park Assist, a Power Operated Tailgate with Programmable Memory Setting, Keyless Drive with Personal Car Communicator and Electric Folding Rear Headrests.
Stepping up to the Platinum trim gets you all the features in Premium Plus, along with desirables that include a Rear Park Assist Camera, a 650-watt Volvo Premium Sound System with Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound, 12 speakers and a seven-inch color monitor and a navigation system with Voice Recognition, Real-Time Traffic and Map Care.
The Powerful XC60 R-Design boasts its own collection of exclusive appearance-and-performance enhancements including a sports steering wheel and gear-lever knob both clad in leather, watch-dial blue-faced instruments, Dual Xenon Headlights, 20-inch "Cratus" alloy wheels and an advanced Sport Chassis with stronger suspension damping.
To explore all the new details on the 2012 Volvo XC60, be sure to contact us to schedule a test drive.

Vehicle Profile: The 2012 Volvo XC60 Safety
The newest XC60 makes safety sexy.

Photo: The 2012 Volvo XC60 Safety
Deeming the 2012 Volvo XC60 an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick, or granting it a Five-Star Safety Rating (as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently did) is like proclaiming the sky blue. Well, of course it is, but there's a whole lot of fascinating stuff that goes into why.
Start outside where the newest XC60 crossover (MSRP $32,900) is the recipient of far more than a beautiful Scandinavian design; there's over 80 years of unparalleled Volvo function to accompany that form. Superior visibility reigns, as all XC60 trims ? 3.2, T6 AWD and R-Design ? get daytime running lights, a set of high-intensity rear foglamps and front and rear side positioning lights. An available pair of active dual xenon headlamps are optional, and actually pivot around corners, providing a vision range boost of about 230 percent during night driving.
The crossover's structure itself is designed to lofty Volvo standards. The passenger compartment is specially reinforced with a high-strength steel safety cage, and the vehicle's sides and front are equipped with energy absorbing deformation zones and a collapsible steering column. For good measure, a low-mounted cross member protects in the event of frontal collisions with vehicles lower than the XC60; nothing slips through the cracks and nothing slips beneath the bumper.
The 2012 XC60 gets a standard 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine, or an optional turbocharged six-cylinder that really takes driving to a higher level. But while the XC60 is specially tuned to be unleashed, it's also brilliantly engineered to be controlled. All trims come standard with Dynamic Stability and Traction Control, and are available with an advanced Haldex® All-Wheel Drive system that expertly and actively delivers torque to the wheels with the best grip. R-Design trims get a special sport-tuned suspension, which delivers exceptionally precise handling.
A standard Rollover Protection System in the XC60 utilizes gyroscope technology to measure the lateral forces placed on the vehicle at any given time. Should it appear as if a rollover is imminent (during a tight turn at high speeds, for example), the system will engage, applying the brakes to one or several wheels to steady the ride and right the ship. The XC60 also gets standard antilock brakes with the added power of Hydraulic Brake Assist, Fading Brake Support and Ready Alert Brakes, all systems designed to aid in emergency braking maneuvers.
The cabin of the 2012 XC60 is outfitted with energy absorbing materials on the doors and panels. All seatbelts come with pretensioners, and all seats get integrated head restraints as part of the comprehensive Volvo Whiplash Protection System®. Front and rear seats are actually contoured to prevent occupants from submarining (slipping beneath the safety belts), and an optional pair of rear dual-stage integrated booster seats with adaptive safety belts fold up to provide small children a higher, safer vantage point.
The XC60 is the world's first to have the Volvo City Safety system as standard equipment. Using advanced infrared technology, City Safety monitors the road ahead for unseen vehicles or obstructions at vehicle speeds up to 19 mph. If it senses a collision is unavoidable, it will prepare the cabin for potential impact, then actively apply brakeforce to slow the vehicle (and limit the severity of the crash) or stop it entirely. Optional systems like Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist and Distance Alert and Collision Warning with Full-Auto Brake and Pedestrian Detection take similar approaches, using radar sensors and cameras to warn and slow/stop you should obstacles appear in front of you. Last, the XC60 is the first passenger vehicle in the world to get available Driver Alert Control and Lane Departure Warning systems, which monitor driver distraction (such as crossing lanes without obvious reason) and alert the driver that perhaps a break is necessary.
Grass is green, the sky is blue and the Volvo XC60 is one of the safest vehicles money can buy. In the case of the 2012 crossover, it's not just where it ends up, but how it gets there that's so impressive.

The Safe + Secure Coverage Plan* offers you tremendous value by saving you thousands of dollars on your vehicle repairs, and provides you peace of mind during your ownership experience. In fact, Volvo has the lowest cost of ownership of any luxury brand according to IntelliChoice.

Volvo XC60 Demonstrates Volvos Commitment to Quality
Design, style and safety converge in forward-looking crossover.

The Volvo XC60 embodies the essence of the Volvo brand and launches a new era of design, engineering and safety for the Swedish car company. The styling of the XC60 translates Volvos traditional visual DNA onto a modern canvas using strong lines and bold, muscular touches. According to Volvo Cars Design Director Steve Mattin, ?If you say that youd recognize a Volvo from 300 feet away today, I dare say the XC60 radiates a clear Volvo presence from at least twice that distance.

Not only does the Volvo XC60 premium utility vehicle point the way forward in terms of the brand?s styling future, but it also introduces the next generation of Volvo safety systems. Of these, the most prominent is City Safety, an active safety feature that continuously monitors the environment around the crossover to help prevent low-speed collisions. When driven at speeds of 18 mph or less, City Safety can detect a vehicle that is stopped or moving considerably slower than the XC60 and automatically hit the brakes to prevent an impact. This helps save Volvo XC60 drivers from accidents that can result from a moment of distraction while behind the wheel in a busy urban environment. City Safety is standard equipment on the Volvo XC60.

Joining City Safety is the revolutionary Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake feature. This unique system combines with the same automatic braking capability to help keep drivers from hitting pedestrians, and help reduce injuries to pedestrians from vehicle impacts. Employing both forward radar and a camera that can distinguish people from other objects, the XC60s Pedestrian Detection system keeps a close watch for anyone crossing in front of the automobile. If someone steps into the path of the XC60, an alarm is sounded, giving drivers a chance to steer out of the way or hit the brakes. If no driver intervention is forthcoming, the Pedestrian Detection system can automatically stop the crossover if it is traveling up to 22 mph. Volvo estimates that this feature alone, if fitted to every car currently on the road, would reduce the number of pedestrian fatalities in the United States by 20 percent.

The XC60 has won some prestigious awards including ?International Truck of the Year from the International Car of the Year Jury; Family Car of the Year from Womens World magazine; a Consumers Digest Best Buy and an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ?Top Safety Pick.

The XC60 also provides a glimpse into how Volvo sees its lineup unfolding over the next few years. The XC60 combines modern, day-to-day utility with a fun and exhilarating experience behind the wheel made possible by its turbocharged engine and taut chassis. Volvos commitment to quality includes building cars that do not compromise the joy of driving for the sake of practicality or safety, and the XC60 is the personification of that pledge.

The Volvo XC60 captures the spirit of Volvo. The philosophy behind its design and its advanced safety features points toward a brilliant future for the premium automaker

Premium Advantage Pricing vs. The Competition

With Volvo's new Premium Advantage Pricing we've reduced the price of many of our 2011 Volvos, while still giving you all the same great features and benefits. And, you pay nothing to repair or maintain your new Volvo for the first five years, courtesy of our Safe + Secure Coverage Plan.

In fact, when stacked up against other luxury class vehicles like Audi, BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz, a fully-equipped Volvo has a clear advantage. But don't take our word for it.

Vehicle Comparison: The 2011 Volvo XC60 vs. the 2011 Audi Q5
The XC60 beats the Q5 in this crossover showdown.

Photo: 2011 Volvo XC60
When directly comparing the Volvo XC60 T6 and Audi Q5, you'll see why the Volvo is the perfect fit for style-conscious buyers on the hunt for an extraordinary vehicle with plenty of safety and substance.
Against the Q5, the 2011 Volvo XC60 T6 offers plenty of advantages. To start, the XC60 T6's standard MSRP, at $38,400, is a whopping $4,100 below the Q5's asking price of $42,500. Included in Volvo's price is Complimentary Scheduled Maintenance for the first five years or 60,000 miles. Audi offers only one year or 5,000 miles of coverage.
The XC60 T6 offers more horsepower than the Q5, too. The XC60's 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder spins out 300 turbocharged hp, and the full 325 lb/ft of torque is available from a low 2,100 rpm. The Q5, with its 3.2-liter V6, is shy of the XC60 T6's brawn by 30 hp and 82 lb/ft. Volvo's long experience with turbocharging makes the XC60 T6's engine flexible, and instead of requiring pricey Premium fuel like the Q5, the Volvo takes it easy on your wallet by requiring only Regular fuel.
All-wheel drive is standard in both vehicles, but the XC60's 9.1 inches of ground clearance is 1.2 inches more than the Q5's 7.9 inches. That's a difference that can mean driving out of the woods instead of walking. More comfort on the drive is another XC60 advantage; there's more front and rear headroom in the XC60, and front-seat passengers have more legroom as well.
The XC60's standard HD Radio delivers crystal-clear sound while Audi doesn't offer you the option on the Q5. A standard Panoramic moonroof keeps the Volvo's interior feeling open and airy, too. There is a panoramic roof available for Q5 buyers, but it's not made of the safety- and serenity-enhancing laminated glass that the Volvo roof is.
Safety being Volvo's calling card, the XC60 T6 demolishes competitors by offering one of the most comprehensive suites of driver aids and protection technologies you'll find on any vehicle, regardless of price. The XC60 is the first vehicle in the world to offer Volvo's City Safety System, which can detect and avoid collisions, and the T6 carries it as standard equipment. Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist, Rear Park Assist Camera, Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake, Lane Departure Warning, Driver Alert Control and Blind Spot Information System are offered on the XC60, too, offering an unmatchable suite of technology. Trailer Stability Assist aids drivers that tow, and while the XC60 T6 offers it, the Q5 does not. Other XC60® features you won't find on the Q5 include dual integrated two-stage child booster seats (a Volvo exclusive), front seat WHIPS whiplash protection (another Volvo exclusive) and front and rear park assist.
Standard Bluetooth® phone integration indicates that Volvo thinks driver distraction should be universally reduced. Audi makes Bluetooth an option. Only the XC60 offers the Intelligent Driver Information System, specifically designed to reduce distraction as well.
The 2011 Volvo XC60 T6 is not just the obvious choice, it's the smart one, especially compared to the Audi Q5. The Volvo is strikingly styled, more luxurious, more powerful and less expensive. The XC60 T6 offers buyers a lot of gain in the premium crossover arena without extracting any pain.

Volvo City Safety Prevents Crashes
Report finds Volvo XC60 involved in fewer accidents.

Photo: Volvo City Safety Prevents Crashes
A new insurance study reports that Volvo's innovative City Safety Technology makes the XC60 a safer option than comparable vehicles.
The analysis, published by the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), found that Volvo XC60s get into fewer low-speed crashes when compared to similar luxury SUVs.
City Safety is a standard feature on every XC60, the 2011 and 2012 S60, the 2012 S80 and the 2012 XC70.
The study examined claim frequency under property damage liability, bodily injury liability and collisions. Specific findings of the analysis included:
  • Property damage claims were filed 27 percent less often for the XC60
  • Injuries claims for the XC60 were filed about half as often
  • Collision claims for the XC60 were 22 percent lower
  • Payouts under property damage liability for the XC60 were 20 percent lower
  • Overall collision losses for the XC60 were 31 percent lower
City Safety is a groundbreaking technology developed by Volvo that monitors vehicles traveling ahead through the use of a laser sensor installed in the windshield at the height of the rearview mirror. Between two and 19 mph, the brakes are automatically applied if the driver does not react in time when a car in front slows down or stops. The brakes are also automatically applied if the driver is going too fast toward a stationary object.
When the relative speed difference between the two vehicles is less than nine mph, a collision is entirely avoided. If the difference is between nine and 19 mph, the speed at impact is reduced by half, thus making a crash less severe.
Another unique Volvo feature is the available Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, a safety system that helps prevent vehicle collisions when a pedestrian unexpectedly walks into a car's path.
Statistics show that Volvo technologies like City Safety are making the roads safer for everyone. As Volvo moves toward achieving Vision 2020, the elimination of serious automotive injuries and fatalities by the year 2020, advanced safety technologies will continue to pave the way for a crash-free future.

Crossover SUVs, thanks to their combination of utility and carlike handling, have become the mainstream choice for many drivers. The Volvo XC60 is the Swedish manufacturer's latest entry. Seating five, the XC60 competes in the growing small luxury crossover segment.

Being that it's a Volvo, you might assume that the XC60 has safety going for it, and you'd be right. There's even a trick City Safety system that automatically brakes the vehicle to prevent or mitigate low-speed collisions. But the XC60 is also a stylish and functional vehicle, and it handles unusually well for a crossover, let alone one with a Volvo badge on the front. It belongs on your short list if you're shopping for a vehicle of this sort.

Current Volvo XC60

The Volvo XC60 premium crossover SUV debuted for the 2010 model year and is available in a single T6 trim level. Its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine puts out 281 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The only transmission is a six-speed automatic with manual control that sends power to an all-wheel-drive system.

Standard features include alloy wheels, power front seats, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity and a CD/MP3 audio system. The optional Technology package upgrades the stereo and adds a navigation system (albeit one of the least user-friendly in the business). Various other packages tack on niceties like heated front and rear seats and a power liftgate, and additional options include a panoramic sunroof and Volvo's integrated child booster seats.

Safety features are plentiful on the Volvo XC60, including stability control, antilock brakes with brake assist, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and whiplash-reducing front seats. With the standard City Safety feature engaged, the XC60 can autonomously apply the vehicle's brakes below certain speeds to prevent or lessen damage from collisions. A Collision Avoidance package is optional and adds a lane departure warning system, a blind-spot warning system, adaptive cruise control and other driver aids.

So the XC60 is Volvo safe. But you expected that. What you might not expect is this tall wagon's considerable appeal in other areas. In reviews, our editors have praised the XC60's avant-garde "floating" center stack, which is the piéce de rèsistance of the generally stylish and classy interior. Real oak trim is available as an option (metallic trim is standard), and the overall quality of materials is high. The roomy and comfortably elevated rear seat has a convenient 40/20/40-split configuration that reveals 67 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity when folded.

On the road, we've found that the Volvo XC60 delivers performance that's easily on par with its European rivals. The turbocharged straight-6 provides ample power with no perceptible lag, though it sounds a bit coarse for an inline six-cylinder. Handling is downright impressive, as the XC60 boasts one of the fastest slalom times of any crossover SUV, though it's hampered by numb steering. The only real demerit here is ride quality -- we think Volvo went a bit overboard with the XC60's handling given the family-friendly nature of this segment, and the ride is overly firm as a result.

All new vehicles sold in the United States come with at least two warranties, and many manufacturers also provide roadside assistance. Described below are the major types of warranties and assistance provided to consumers. See your owner's manual, the manufacturer's website or the dealer for specific details.

Basic Warranty: The basic warranty covers everything except items that are subject to wear and tear or replacement in the ordinary course of vehicle ownership, such as oil and air filters, wiper blades and brake pads. Tires and batteries are often excluded, but usually have their own warranty provided by the manufacturers of those items. Emissions equipment is required by Federal law to be covered for five years or 50,000 miles.

Drive Train Warranty: In some cases the drive train warranty continues after the basic warranty has expired. This part of the warranty covers most of the parts that make the vehicle move, including the engine, transmission, drive axles and driveshaft. Like the basic warranty, "consumable" parts such as hoses and belts are not covered. However, most of the internal parts of the engine, such as the pistons and bearings, which are also subject to wear and tear, are covered by the drive train warranty.

Rust or Corrosion Warranty: This warranty covers the vehicle's sheet metal, and protects you from rust and corrosion that are severe enough to cause a hole - surface rust is not covered. However, if you keep your car washed and waxed rust shouldn't be a problem.

Roadside Assistance: Many manufacturers provide a service that will rescue you if your car leaves you stranded, even if it's your fault. Lock yourself out of the car? Run out of gas? Got a flat tire? A call to the manufacturer's toll-free number will result in somebody showing up who can help you out. There is a huge variance in these programs so check ahead of time to see what is covered and what you will have to pay for.
