The Volvo XC60 embodies the essence of the Volvo brand and launches a new era of design, engineering and safety for the Swedish car company. Not only does the Volvo XC60 premium utility vehicle point the way forward in terms of the brand?s styling future, but it also introduces the next generation of Volvo safety systems. Of these, the most prominent is City Safety, an active safety feature that continuously monitors the environment around the crossover to help prevent low-speed collisions. When driven at speeds of 18 mph or less, City Safety can detect a vehicle that is stopped or moving considerably slower than the XC60 and automatically hit the brakes to prevent an impact. This helps save Volvo XC60 drivers from accidents that can result from a moment of distraction while behind the wheel in a busy urban environment. City Safety is standard equipment on the Volvo XC60.

 

Joining City Safety is the revolutionary Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake feature. This unique system combines with the same automatic braking capability to help keep drivers from hitting pedestrians, and help reduce injuries to pedestrians from vehicle impacts. Employing both forward radar and a camera that can distinguish people from other objects, the XC60s Pedestrian Detection system keeps a close watch for anyone crossing in front of the automobile. If someone steps into the path of the XC60, an alarm is sounded, giving drivers a chance to steer out of the way or hit the brakes. If no driver intervention is forthcoming, the Pedestrian Detection system can automatically stop the crossover if it is traveling up to 22 mph. Volvo estimates that this feature alone, if fitted to every car currently on the road, would reduce the number of pedestrian fatalities in the United States by 20 percent.

The Q5, with its 3.2-liter V6, is shy of the XC60 T6's brawn by 30 hp and 82 lb/ft. Volvo's long experience with turbocharging makes the XC60 T6's engine flexible, and instead of requiring pricey Premium fuel like the Q5, the Volvo takes it easy on your wallet by requiring only Regular fuel.

All-wheel drive is standard in both vehicles, but the XC60's 9.1 inches of ground clearance is 1.2 inches more than the Q5's 7.9 inches. That's a difference that can mean driving out of the woods instead of walking. Standard Bluetooth^® phone integration indicates that Volvo thinks driver distraction should be universally reduced. Audi makes Bluetooth an option. Only the XC60 offers the Intelligent Driver Information System, specifically designed to reduce distraction as well.
